Memory test : Chimps vesus humans

Those who still assume that chimpanzees could not match humans in memory and other mental skills have been prooved wrong. Japanese scientists were testing the memory of chimpanzees - the tasks involved remembering the location of numbers on a screen, and correctly recalling the sequence. The result was really interesting.

The findings in 2007, published in Current Biology, show that we may have under-estimated the intelligence of our closest living relatives: It has been discovered that chimpanzees have an extraordinary photographic memory that is far superior to ours.

For more information about the test, you can visit ex. the National Geographic website.

Chameleon cake

Here is a recipe for one of my favourite cakes. I call it a chameleon cake because depending on the last ingredient(s) you add, it tastes each time different. It is very easy to make and tastes great!

Base ingredients:
200 g semolina (dehydrated fine wheat dunst)
500 g tvaroh (special white cheese) - you can substitute it by white yoghurt
160 g vegetable butter - you can substitute it by vegetable oil or normal butter
200 g sugar
2 eggs
12 g baking powder
crumb of salt

Last ingredient(s):
Use your phantasy! You can add raisins, nuts, chocolate or dry fruit, milled walnuts,... it always tastes delicious. My favourite variation is with pieces of dark chocolate & hazel nuts.

Mix the base ingredients in a bowl (manually or you can use a mixer), add the last ingredient, pour it on a baking pan greased with butter and bake 10-15 min at 200°C (until the cake grows double) and then bake another 20-30 min at 160°C until the surface turns brown. Let it cool down a little and you can finally eat it!

Christmas variation: Prepare the cake of base ingredients and milled walnuts. After the cake is ready and cool, cut it in small cubes (3x3x3 cm), wet the cubes in warm liquid chocolate and cover them by chopped coconut immediately. Cool the cubes in the fridge. You get delicious Christmas sweets!

Tips:
  • Use brown sugar, it is healhier.
  • Use defatted tvaroh, the cake tastes equally delicious and you avoid unnecessary fat.
  • Eat it with Haagen Dazs ice cream on the top (not very healthy but it is worth the sin. ;-) ).
If you decide to bake this cake, let us know here whether you liked it what last ingredients you used! =)

For John

It is already 9th here in Europe but in America is still December 8th therefore I would like to dedicate this post to one of the most loved persons in music history: John Lennon.

His premature death definitely stripped the world off of one of the most brilliant musicians of all times and also took away a man who was always trying to improve the world.

There is no doubt that John's and The Beatles music has been an inspiration for lots of us so in these troubled times I find no better way to remember John than by leaving you with this song... hopefully will encourage you to make a positive difference around you:

PS: On December 8th my little brother was born, so happy birthday for him :)))

Acrobats

I'd like to share two videos with you today as they've strongly impressed me. It is astonishing what some people can do with their bodies.

In the first video, you can watch two Ukrainian guys, acrobatic Duo Iroshnikov:

In the second video, you can admire a Chinese acrobat on poles:

I encourage you to watch the videos until the end, it is incredible what these guys can do... There are parts where I stopped breathing...

Enjoy. =)

NASA and the arsenic microbe

There was a lot of frenzy about yesterday, December the 2nd, regarding some announcement by NASA supposedly related to extraterrestrial life. Unfortunately, when the date came the hype proved itself (again) misled.

For some people's (or most?) surprise NASA's announcement didn't have anything to do with extraterrestrial life but actually with different life forms on our own planet: a newly discovered microbe strain called GFAJ-1 that grows on arsenic.

For a better explanation take a look at these two posts from the Huffington Post, here and here.

Hangover?

Two weeks ago, I wrote something about to keep balance.

In my opinion this means to live the moment as it is, if you are with you partner, then that moment is the greatest stuff that you can do, if you are at work, concentrate and deliver your commitments, just be aware to not promise what you can not deliver.

But what about when you go to party? when you go to that disco, bar, salsa or friends place and you are drinking some alcohol :) there is way how you can feel better next day.

The best is... before going back to the bed, take a cucumber, prefer those ones covered with plastic, since they do not have wax on, cut it in pieces, add some water, blend it and drink it.

The cucumber is one of the best super-foods in terms of electrolytes it is an alkaline, non-starchy vegetable. It has just the exact minerals and vitamins that your body needs to recover after that night of drinking some tars or cups.

But not only that cucumber may help you to make your hangover better.
  • Raw cucumber, when applied on the skin, can help reduce heat and inflammation.
  • For those hot days in summer you may have a nice drink of cucumber to feel fresh.
  • The diuretic, cooling and cleansing property of cucumber makes it good for skin.
  • Fresh cucumber juice can provide relief from heartburn, acid stomach, gastritis and even ulcer.
  • Placing a cucumber slice over the eyes not only soothes them, but also reduces swelling.
  • Daily consumption of cucumber juice helps control cases of eczema, arthritis and gout.
  • Cucumber has been found to be beneficial for those suffering from lung, stomach and chest problems.
  • The potassium in cucumber makes it useful for the problem of high and low blood pressure.
  • Cucumber contains Erepsin, the enzyme that helps in protein digestion.
  • Cucumber juice is said to promote hair growth, especially when it is added to the juice of carrot, lettuce and spinach.
  • Cucumber juice, when mixed with carrot juice, is said to be good for rheumatic conditions caused by excessive uric acid in the body.
  • Cucumber can prove to be beneficial for those suffering from diseases of the teeth and gums, especially in cases of pyorrhea.
  • Being rich in minerals, cucumber helps prevent splitting of nails of the fingers and toes.
  • Cucumber has been associated with healing properties in relation to diseases of the kidney, urinary bladder, liver and pancreas.
  • Those suffering from diabetes have been found to benefit from the consumption of cucumber/cucumber juice

So next time that you will go to the super market be sure to include some nice cucumbers to be consumed by you.

Have a great week!

Coming back!

It has been a long while since I last posted something here. It is not that I forgot about the blog (or about you, our readers) but basically lots of things have been keeping me busy.

On the other hand, I know that some of the other contributors got discouraged by the lack of feedback from our readers. Not my case. Why? Because I see that there are a lot of people visiting this blog and that is a good enough reason for me to keep writting! Do not get me wrong: it is not that I wouldn't like to see more comments, suggestions, etc from you, of course I would like to see more of those! However, the fact of being read by over a thousand visitors already is very encouraging. One of the things I have told the other contributors has been that there might not be lots of written comments but lots of persons have told me they like the blog, and that they have found those posts useful or interesting. Anyway, if you feel like encouraging the other contributors to keep writing you know how to do it ;)

Among the things that I was doing while I wasn't blogging, one was attending a Social Business Lab on October 14th here in Prague. What is a Social Business you might wonder? It is a concept coined by Prof. Muhammad Yunus and that eventually made him win the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. In a nutshell, think of it as an approach to eradicate poverty where poor people are given the economic means (and support) to set up a business by themselves. You are reading correctly, it means helping poor people becoming business men and women. To quote Prof. Yunus:
Essentially it is a non-loss, non-dividend business aimed at social objectives – education, health, environment, whatever is needed to address the problems faced by society. The profits here remain with the business and help it to grow further.
Interesting, right? If you would like to take a look at the whole explanation of the concept go here.

Well, that Social Business Lab was one thing (a wonderful one, because besides getting more familiarized with the concept we met wonderful people there with which we hope to work closely in the future).

Then we had an event called Together 2010, sponsored by the Youth in Action Programme, (at the same venue where SBL was held... it is called The Hub, which I highly recommend for such events) to expand the Harmonic World network in Europe and to get to know our current partners. We had charming visitors from Estonia, Italy, Norway, Poland and Slovakia. The experience was truly enriching for everyone and we look forward to work together again!

Last but not least, I was invited by a friend working for AFS in the Czech Republic to make a presentation about Mexico. I thought it would be a great opportunity to talk about a different side of Mexico, that it is frequently overlooked: poverty. I presented how Fondo Para La Paz, a Mexican private institution, works in some of the poorest states in Mexico. The presentation went very well and at the end a couple of ladies showed real interest. Hopefully they will be able to help somehow.

Anyway, now things are a bit more quiet but we still have a long way to go. We have many things to do, many meetings to attend (or organize) and many programs to develop for the year to come.

In the meantime I would like to thank our readers and our contributors for sticking with us. I assure you will find posts more regularly. At least one per week from Sergio and myself. So please keep in touch, stay positive and help your neighbor (or a stranger) whenever possible (it won't hurt and would certainly make a difference).

By the way, happy Thanksgiving to everyone that celebrates it!

The Power of Now

Today, I would like to share some of the concepts and thoughts that are presented in a book that I currently read, as I find them very inspiring and useful. The book's title is The Power of Now and it is written by Eckhart Tolle. The main message of the book is to encourage people to live in the present moment.

Most of the time, we focus on the future or keep returning to the past and we forget to live in the present. Why is it so important to concentrate on the present moment? Above all, because it is the only real one - nor the past nor the future actually exist. It is of course important to plan things in order to achieve our goals and learn from our past experiences, but it should not prevent us from living in the present moment...

  • If you accept the situation as it is - you accept the present moment without wanting to escape it - it will begin to help you instead of doing you harm.
  • When you are not satisfied with what you are doing, change the way how you do it. The way how we do things is many times more important then what we actually do.
  • Don't focus on a result. Concentrate on the activity and the desired result will come automatically.
  • Don't judge. By continuous judging, you only cause yourself harm, discomfort and suffering.
  • If you complain about something, you refuse the present moment. You create a victim of yourself. Therefore, either change the situation, accept it or leave. Everything else would be a madness.
  • If you don't like a situation, be responsible for your life - you have three meaningful options what to do: change the undesirable situation, accept it or leave. And you need to choose NOW. Face up the consequences of your decision, don't look for excuses. Keep your inner space clean.
  • If your mind is carrying a burden of the past, your life will not change. The future will only be a replication of the past. There can be some light changes but a true transformation is very rare as it comes only if you manage to concentrate on the present moment intensively enough to get rid of the burden of the past.
  • How can you get rid of the burden you are wearing? By realizing that you don't want to carry it anymore and just throwing it away.
  • Observe your negative emotions and ask "what is happening in me right now?" By doing so, you separate the emotions from yourself and realize that they exist "outside" you, they are not part of you.
  • If you decide to do something, do it without negative emotions. Action based on an understanding of the situation is more effective than action that comes out from negative emotions.
  • It is not important whether your emotions are justified or not. The fact is that you are fighting what is. You create an enemy from the present moment.
  • You need to free yourself from your never ending flow of thoughts. How? Observe them. Your ego (the false "you" that you create by identifying yourself unconsiously with your mind) is dependent on your thoughts and it cannot exist if you stop this flow of thoughts. Once you realize that you are smiling when observing your thoughts, it means that you finally don't take them too seriously, because you now understand that your identity doesn't depend on them, it doesn't consist of them.
  • Your identity rises from a much deeper level of your heart, not your mind.
  • As soon as you are able to free yourself from your mind/thoughts, you won't care whether you are right or not, because you will know that beeing wrong doesn't affect your identity/your internal integrity and you won't fear loosing it. You will be able to clearly express your opinion without feeling a need to be aggressive. Acting so, you will prevent conflicts that harm relations between people.
  • Power over another person is just a weekness pretending to be a strenght.
  • "Time is what prevents us from seeing the light. There is no bigger obstacle on our way to the Truth then time." Eckart (13th century). In this case, time is understood as psychological time - if you keep thinking about your mistakes from the past, you are identifying yourself with them and you are creating your false self. On the contrary, if you made a mistake in the past that you are trying to correct now, you are using chronological time, which is desirable.
  • All your problems are illusions of your mind.
  • You are whole already now. As soon as you understand this, you will not be motivated by fear, anger, frustration or a need to become important anymore. You will not be affraid of beeing unsuccessful (which your ego considers loosing your identity). You will free yourself from the need to become someone. Your satisfaction and identity of your self will not depend on the results of your actions, so you free yourself from fear.
  • Nothing real can be harmed. Therefore, you don't need to fear to loose it.
  • Wherever you are, be there completely.
  • Waiting is a state of mind. It means that you want future and refuse the present. This deteriorates the quality of your life because you are missing the present moment. If you catch yorself waiting for something, concentrate on the present moment and enjoy it.
  • When you are at a very beautiful place, ovewhelmed by its beauty, you experience a very deep and pleasant feeling. At this moment, you don't think anything, you don't focus on the future nor the past, you are fully in the present moment. This is an example of a state of enlightenment.
  • You get to know the Truth when you feel that death is comming. The death frees you from everything you are not. The secret of life is to die before you die - to realize that death doesn't exist.

Namaste.

Walking as happy human.

I remember a couple of years ago when I was going out to meet new girls, I always wanted to be different; I mean why I should I go trough all the process as everyone else. In my list of questions looking for the "ONE: I had one favorite...

" If you could have one wish, what would it be? " and why of course.

It is so impressive that almost everyone will reply "to be happy", and in the description we can always find something to speak about it.

I heard that some people will reply once they will get their Audi, that job that are expecting for so long, once they will travel to certain place, and even some other people asking for the health of themselves or someone else that they love or even to bring back someone from afterlife.

But isn't that coincidence that we really want happiness, I mean I am not the first one saying it, but once we realize that all those wishes are just temporal, I mean once you have the Audi, you will be wishing to not get scratched or even stole! Or to never loose your job once you have it.

But once we realize that happiness is a matter of everyday, and to be aware in every moment makes things complete different.

I can only compare happiness with the balance of walking.

It takes some time to learn it, but it is so natural, so free, you don't need books, tutors or even gurus to show you how, it is so much inside you, you can feel when you are doing good when a shoe fits you, and the only thing that we all have to do is to remove the burden that we don't really need.

Think about it!, when you walk you need to balance your body all the time is not an event that happens once and you get there for ever, you might have challenges and you may fall, you may try new things but always on your feet. And sometimes you may help others to stand up, but you can't help others to walk, is something that we all must learn by ourselves.

One person very close to me, told me: My knees are killing me... I replied to her, maybe if you will loose those 25 kg that you don't need your knees will feel better.

How many times you have been in a position that to loose your own burden takes discipline, takes effort, and is not something that will happen as cheap magic trick. Even miracles take time!

So what things are around you that don't let you be happy, that don't let you walk free as natural, may it be conditions where you are, people that you choose to share your life, and very often this things are so clear for others and it is so difficult to see by ourselves.

But one thing is for sure, if you are walking in a good way, you feel it, you don’t need any benchmark, comparison or chart. You know when if feels good. The same is when you know that you are doing what you enjoy and when you are happy… every moment in every step.

I wish to you all a happy walks.

From my heart to yours.

Bake, grill, fry or steam? Some vegetable do's and dont's

Boiled, frozen, sloppy, slimy or dripping in fat? It's time to stop soiling our vegetables! Put your heart into it, or at least your attention. Here's a quick quide of easiest ways how to properly treat your vegetables.
First some quick and general tips:

1)Make'em feel special: make vegetables the star and center or your meal!
2) NEVER BOIL vegetables. Ever. You spoil the color and texture, as well as remove a large part of their nutrients.

3) Prepare each type of vegetable separately. If you are making a dish with a mix of vegetables, then prepare each vegetable rhe right way first, THEN mix them together. Getting the right texture is all about timing! Check frequently, and taste to see if they are not too hard and not too soft.

4) Baking brings out the most flavour, steaming is the fastest (except for boiling which I banned in point 1) while frying and grilling gives the nicest and crispiest surface.

Fried vegetables:

The softer and smaller the vegetable, the shorter time it takes to prepare them and the higher the temperature you can use.
Mushrooms for example are best fried. NEVER wash mushrooms in water, just clean them with a clean, dry towel. Chop them into slices as thick as a cigarette. Set your teflon pan to a real high temperature and start frying. Wait untill you see the water coming out of the musrooms, once they are done "sweating" you can add a tiny, tiny bit of olive oil and some salt and pepper. After this point you leave them frying for two minutes more, till they golden on the outside and soft, but not too soft, on the inside. Don't leave the room!

Squash is nice fried as well, but take longer time than mushrooms so you need to lower the temperature. Dont put oil either, just fry at low temperature untill they soften (also in the middle; taste to check!) then you can add a tiny bit of oil and turn the heat on to make the surface more golden.

Bake it!
Baking brings out flavour like no other method and is the best way to prepare harder vegetables which need a lot of time to soften, such as beets, brussel sprouts, potatoes, and carrots for example, and also fazole.
Just chop, put them in a bowl, tiny bit of oil, salt and maybe some spices, set your oven to 180 degrees, and then all you have to do is wait for about half an hour. Check up on them regularly, stir them a little bit during half the baking time. Take care of them!
As on the photo, the best way to make fazole is baking. Chop off the unedible edges, and of course add a little but of oil, salt and a lot of sesame seeeds. Lovely!

Stuff you can steam:
Broccoli is best steamed I find. It is very quick, so you need to check them frequently. A minute too long is....too long. I'd say it takes about five minutes, but check.
You can also steam carrots, potatoes, corn and any other hard type of vegetable.
To prepare colliflower you can steam it till its completely soft, then put it into a frying pan with some spring onions, an egg or two, some garlic powder, pepper, salt. Mash it together and it tastes lovely.

Thats it for now, more to follow!

Brain stimulator for newborn babies

Sergio shared wth me this neat video, it is supposed to stimulate newborn babies brain. If any of you have a baby please let us know if it works :D

Description by the author below. Enjoy!

Newborn Visual/Audio Brain-Centers Stimulator for Baby Phaedra from Kaliptus on Vimeo.

A Visual/Audio Brain Center stimulator for newborn babies!

Newborns are only capable of focusing 8 to 10 inches from their face. They also prefer black and white, high contrast images to color graphics. This audio based visualizer is designed help newborn babies develop their vision & hearing brain centers. I made it for my daughter Phaedra Love :)

From 0 - 3 months, a newborn's retina lacks the ability to distinguish details and textures. "When your newborn looks at your hair, she doesn't get a sense of the individual hairs, but just a sort of generalized, uniform color," says Charles Gilbert. For that reason, "infants tend to seek out things with a lot of contrast, which are easier to see and more interesting to them," adds Claire B. Kopp, Ph.D., adjunct professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, and author of Baby Steps. When a newborn looks at your face, for instance, they ignore your nose and mouth, which are subtly shaded and blend into the rest of your face. Instead, they are more likely to stare at the contrast between the dark of your pupils and the whites of your eyes.

Newborns are not, as was long believed, color-blind. By measuring a baby's brain waves and eye movements, researchers have determined that the typical newborn can even tell the difference between red and green.

I have then created this brain-stimulator in hopes of improving the development of my baby girl, Phaedra's visual and audio brain centers.

Compassion goes scientific

Have you ever wondered what is the effect of meditation on brain-wave patterns? Do you think it is possible to scientifically measure kindness and compassion and put them in a scientific model?

A research lab called Center For Investigating Healthy Minds, founded by Dr. Richard Davidson, a neuroscientist at the University of Wisconsin, has just received a $50,000 USD from none other than the Dalai Lama to fund the Center's research on kindness and compassion.

If you would like to take a look at the story covered by the NYT click here.

It is undoubtely a challenging quest and I sincerely hope it will succeed.

Vipassana Meditation Course

In reaction to the previous article posted by Rodrigo, I'd like to express my admiration to Ms. K. for the step she is taking, wish her all the best on her journey and I hope that she will find what she is looking for... For those who'd like to find their inner calmness and long-lasting happiness but cannot (or don't want to) leave for such a long time, I'd like to share some information about a ten days Vipassana Meditation course. I haven't attended this course, however I met one man who experienced it and he stated that it was one of the most enriching and helpful experiences of his life.

Vipassana Meditation is one of India's most ancient techniques of meditation (more than 2500 years ago), which was taught as a universal remedy for universal ills, as an art of living. "Vipassana" means "to see things as they really are". It is a process of self-purification by self-observation which is described as following: One begins by observing the natural breath to concentrate the mind. Then, with a sharpened awareness, one proceeds to observe the changing nature of body and mind and experiences the universal truths of impermanence, suffering and egolessness. This truth-realization by direct experience results in mental purification.

Courses of Vipassana Meditation are provided by S. N. Goenka or one of his assistant teachers and last ten days. They are held several times a year throughout the whole world (see the schedules here) and are run solely on a donation basis. The money collected after the course is used to facilitate the lessons for future atendees.

Here comes the tough part. There is a code of discipline that everybody needs to follow during the ten day course: You are not allowed to drink alcohol, take drugs, smoke, have sex, use mobile phones or computers, wear provoking clothes or be naked, lie, communicate with other participants, do exercise, read, write, play musical instruments... to summarize, you are not allowed to do anything else than meditate, discuss with the teacher, eat and sleep (but only when you are supposed to do so). The rules are so strict in order to ensure that everybody is fully concentrated on their minds and doesn't get distracted. And the schedule? You wake up at 4 a.m. and meditate basically the whole day untill 9.30 p.m., you only have breaks for eating. Vegetarian food is provided (free), it is not permitted to bring your own food or to fast.

Really extreme, don't you think? No wonder that many people leave the course prematurely. The majority of the attendees go through heavy depressions during the course as the deepest, unconscious "mess" comes up to the surface. However, those who stay till the end manage to get rid of this internal mess and traumas that have been accumulated since they were born and therefore purify their minds. This allowes them to find their inner calmness and long-lasting happiness.

What do you think, is it worth the ten days suffering? Do you know a less painfull but equally (or more) efficient way how to reach the same?

Looking forward to your comments.

Namaste.

Nourishing our spirit

I would like to share a message I got a few days ago from a friend of mine. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I do and that you find it inspiring. I will not post her email out of respect for her privacy but if I get her permission I will post the address.

September 13 at 2:44pm
Dear amazing beings,

This message is to let you know that I will be disactivating my FB account for some time (not sure how long) because I am voluntarily choosing to loosen up a little bit my attachments.. It's not easy to do that but I believe (and experienced) that inner calmness and long-lasting happiness comes from loving others (and the world) freely and without clinging. Desiring or needing specific pleasures in our life is what causes harm to our emotional being because when we don't get what we want, we usually suffer (or at least I do:).

As a result, I decided to leave NYC for some time and move to a meditation retreat center where I will volunteer, do some work practice, meditate a little bit, and just be.. mindful.. The program is initially for 3 months, afterwards let's see if we will extend my stay. That said, although Facebook is obviously a great way how to connect with people when you are away, it can also be quite distracting. And because I do feel weak from time to time about my own spiritual path, seeing you doing a lot of fun stuff might make me desire too much to be with you (wherever you are:)

Deciding to come to the center, there were two things that were difficult to give up - my life in NYC with all my friends and my plans for short-term future. However, I strongly feel that taking some time for "nourishing our spirit" is an investment for our whole life - establishing a foundation of mindfulness through our spiritual practice (whatever the path is) is something you will never loose or regret. Personally, mindfulness helps me to be aware of my emotions, thoughts, and.. the present moment!:) To quote one of my favorite authors, Thich Nhat Hahn:

“The best way to take care of the future is to take care of the present moment. Practicing conscious breathing, being aware of each thought or action, we are fully alive in the present moment. Channeling our energies toward being aware of what is going on in the present moment, we discover peace and happiness that are available right now. The well is within us.”

Honestly, sometimes it's not easy to "be mindful" and that's why I decided to surround myself with an environment that will help me strengthen this practice by allowing me to learn more about myself. Since I would like to focus my future career on helping others, I want to establish really healthy mental well-being to be able to serve the world in the best way I could.

Sooooo, the purpose of this long message is: to let you know what I'm doing with my life, why I'm leaving FB, and.. if you want to connect with me, to give you my email (if you don't have it already) so that I can hear also about your life, your journey, your desires, or your weaknesses:)

My email ***** so please write me, even if just a few lines, I will be happy that you are thinking of me:)I'm sending you a lot of love.. Let's pray together for clarity of mind in whatever we are doing..

K***

Fisherman, Model and Yoga Teacher

Yesterday, I was watching a very good talk show. Among the invitees, there was a fisherman (a very special one as you will see), a top model and a yoga teacher. All three have a very interesting history.

The first guy invited was a son of a very famous composer and was supposed to become one as well or at least to dedicate himself to music, but one day he revolted to his father's will, left the music academy, his country and became kind of a fisherman. He spent years in different parts of the world including Amazonia and visited places of the Earth that were never visited by a white man before. He was living with jungle tribes and of course, he was hunting fish. He owns many world records because he managed to capture (and let free again) a high number of fish that were several meters long and looked like prahistoric creatures. He filmed some of his journeys for National Geographic as well and was a guest of Jay Leno's talk show as one of a few foreign invitees in the history of the show. Btw, I've learned a very interesting recipe from him (unfortunately not suitable for vegatarians): Cover big jungle worms in the stinky mud where everybody wash their feet, and let it dry in the hot sun. You get tasty crisps... well, not so badly tasting crisps, at the end you have to eat something to survive... ;-)

The second guest was a vary famous top model that left her small home town at the age of 15 and went to a casting directly to Paris because she wanted to be a top model. She presented herself there with a dress that her sister sewed for her (so you can imagine LOL). And she has made it. Nowadays, she belongs to the most famous world top models. Although she is not the youngest one anymore, she still looks gorgeous... she is pregnant, very happy with her new husband and still successfully working as a model.

The third invitee was a guy that spent ten years in a prison in India (FYI, for smuggling more then two kg of hashish. =D ) He stated that in the prison, you can go or down (heroin, AIDS,...) or up (educate yourself, use the time for your personal growth). He chose the second option, started to read books and saint writings and volunteered to teach yoga in the prison. Soon, he became very famous in the country as he was the only one foreign yoga teacher in India who was moreover teaching in a prison. He said something interesting and very true: That the leader is simply the one who gets up first and does the thing.

As you can see, these people have very different lifes, very rich and unusual experiences. It has been very inspiring for me to listen to their life stories. What do they have in common? All of them did something unusual and "big" in their lifes. They decided to follow their "internal voice" or how you want to call it and do what they wanted to do, no matter how crazy their idea seemed to be to other people and no matter what circumstances they were facing. They became very successful and reached their happiness.

We always have a choice and we are always free to do anything we want in our lifes in order to feel good and fulfilled.

Namaste.

Nutrition data

If youre wondering whether you are eating right, getting enough protein, vitamins, carbohydrates ect. then check out this webpage: www.nutritiondata.com
Especially for vegetarians it could be useful to check if your diet is sustainable or not.
It has the most extensive list of any food items I have seen online. You enter the food you ate on a list, find it, and it gives you the caloric content of what you ate along with the nutrition information. It also has a "better choices" option you can click on so that if you want something healthier or something less caloric, it would recommend you something.
It also ranges food in a parametre of "optimal health", "fulness factor", and whether it is good for weight loss or weight gain.

If you are lost, go to the nearest lamp

When you need to call for help but you are not able to identify where in Prague you are, just go to the nearest lamp in the street.

Does this sound weird to you?

It probably does... =D

But it works.

How is it possible?

On each lamp in the street, you will find a label with a unique number, usually at eye-level. This system of labels allows the rescuer (155 ambulance, 150 firemen, 158 police or 112 European emergency call) to allocate the caller with accuracy of a couple of meters! This system works also for example in Liberec, Ceska Lipa, Most, Hradec Kralove or Kostelec nad Cernymi lesy.

A similar system is used also at railway crossings in the Czech Republic so if your car gets stuck on the tracks, don't panic and immediately look for a white label that is pasted at the back of the sign "railway crossing", on the railway cross or at the back of the traffic lights. Then call 112. If you manage to do this quickly, you have a high chance to prevent a collision with the train.

I deeply hope that you will never need to look for the label, however, it is definitely useful to know this, just in case.

Yoga the Painkiller

Today I woke up at 7 a.m. with a pain (spasm) in my leg's muscle! I must have exaggerated my workout in the gym in the last days I guess... =( I thought to go to buy some pills and vitamins first but then it occured to me that I could better do yoga. I was slightly hungry and lazy but repressed these feelings and started to excersice P90X Yoga X. It is a very challenging and at the same time exciting yoga workout lead by Tony Horton who is absolutely awesome.

At the beginning, I was thinking "what the hell am I doing??!!" because I felt quite lame but after a couple of minutes, I really started to enjoy it and had an excellent yoga workout. And you know what? My leg stopped to hurt!!! =D After feeding and walking Kompa (dog), I prepared my breakfast (All Bran with banana, mango, kiwi and strawberries) and it never tasted better. Now I feel revitalized (both physically and mentally) and full of energy to begin the weekend. =)

Farmers' markets in Prague

Are you sick of fruit and vegetable without taste that is offered to us in the majority of shops? Do you prefare to consume fruit and vegetable that is harvested when naturally matured instead of those that are matured artificially during or after transportation? Go to Farmers' markets.

Farmer's markets are places where Czech farmers are selling their fresh products directly to final consumers. Farmers' markets that are opened on regular basis are situated at Kubanske namesti (Prague 10) and Naplavka (near Palackeho namesti, Prague 2) - see opening hours - but there are more then ten markets in total all over Prague that open ocassionally. According to the latest information available, one will be opened at Jiriho z Podebrad in September as well.

What can you buy at these markets? Basically all fruit and vegetable that is currently beeing harvested (some people may wonder why they cannot get tomatoes in May but that's part of the education the these markets provide ;-D ), fish, meat, dairy produce, eggs, mushrooms, honey, pastry,... At Kubanske namesti, you can buy fresh cow milk from a vending machine (however, be careful with milk as it is not very healthy as Rodrigo alreday mentioned in one of his articles).

I can tell you that there is a huge difference between fruit and vegetable that mature in the garden in the sun and those that are offered in the majority of shops. You may not believe me but there is a huge difference even between the taste of garlic that is grown and harvested in the propper way and the one you buy in the Vietnamese shops (nearly without taste). You may laugh but once you try and are able compare, you realize it is true. Moreover, I don't need to mention that fruits and vegetables that are not matured artificially are also much healthier...

So why not to visit them? I promise, you will not regret.

Namaste.

Where to buy fresh fish in Prague

Good news for everyone that live in Prague and like eating fish! There is a new shop on Vinohradska street between the tram stations Vinohradska trznice and Italska called FishPoint. They are offering different types of fresh fish - I've bought salmon, tuna, codfish and bar victoria so far and all were fresh and tasted excellent. (I prepared some of them on grill with lemon, salt and fresh herbs and I baked the codfish in the oven wrapped with tomatoes, olives, slices of onion, tomatoe sauce, pepper, salt and added roasted almonds at the end... yummy.)

Btw, I really recommend bar victoria to those of you that hate separating fish bones while eating because filets of this fish don't have any bones! Moreover, it is the best choice for children who don't like fish because bar victoria doesn't smell or taste like a typical fish but more like something between fish and poultry.

I also bought precooked large shrimps and prepared them on a pan with white wine, garlic and salt and they were delicious! (Considering I am not a seafood fan, you can imagine that thay must have been REALLY delicious). And as they are precooked, in case you are in hurry or lazy to cook, you don't even need to do anything else but heat them in a microwave and they are ready for consumption.

The prices are not bad at all considering the quality (ranging from 40 to 80Kc/100g, shrimps 38Kc/100g which are like 5-6 big shrimps).

I am already looking forward to visiting this shop again, maybe see you there! =)

How could I get rid of all these things?

I am sure that everyone needs to deal with this question now and then. The reasons why can vary - we might have a wardrobe full of things that we don't use anymore, or we are moving and don't want to carry all the stuff that we've acummulated during the years,... The easiest way how to solve the problem is to simply throw the things to garbage or put them near to the ash bin and hope somebody will find them useful. We can also use them as a nice present for homeless people - but be careful, they have a very good memory and if you give them something once, they may chase you for more for the rest of your lifes... so better chose a homeless somewhere far away from the place where you live. ;-)

But sometimes, the things you don't want anymore are really nice and quite new and you think it is a pitty to throw them away, which is my case. I've tried to sell some clothes and other stuff that I don't want to keep anymore - I placed many advertisements on internet (Hyperinzerce, Bazar, Annonce, Aukro,...) but I wasn't able to sell the majority of things. So I thought ok, let's do a good turn and donate them. However, I came across a problem here - it is not easy to donate things to organizations because you usually need to follow their complicated prosedures. Or do you have a different experience? Finally, walking in a street, an interesting poster attracted my attention. It was encouraging to donate things in good condition to Domov Sue Ryder.

Comming home, I googled their website http://www.sue-ryder.cz/en and found out that Domov Sue Ryder is a non-government, not-for-profit organization that provides care for people who need help - mainly providing care to elderly frail people. One of the financial sources they use to gather money is through selling donated things in their shops http://www.sue-ryder.cz/dobrocinne-obchody.html to public. The product range is broad: clothes, fashion accessories, gift items, toys, books, pictures, small furniture,... You simply bring the things you want to donate to the shop during opening hours or you can arrange a date and donate the things at the time of your convenience or they can even come to pick up the things to your home!

I strongly encourage you to donate what you don't need anymore to them because beside getting rid of your things very easily, you facilitate that they find the way to a new owner (buyer) that deserves them and, what is the most important, you contribute to social and health care for old ill people who really need it. I certainly will participate. And you?

Red Beet Based Recipes

I LOVE red beets.
Too bad most people just buy the pickled ones which hides the true taste and texture of a good fresh beet.
They cost next to nothing, you can buy them everywhere, but make sure they are not soft. Store them in the fridge and they stay fresh for nearly two weeks.
I like them on their own as well, diced and steamed they taste great with just a tiny bit of oil and salt.
If you want a bigger meal I'd go for the:

Baked Beets, Carrot and Sweet Potatoes

1) preheat your oven to 180 degrees celsius

2)Peel and Dice into small cubes equal amounts of:

  • fresh, peeled Red beets
  • Carrots
  • Sweet Potatoes (if youre cutting back on carbs it tastes great without it also)

3) Flavour:

  • 1 tbs olive oil
  • 1tbs honey
  • half a tbs of garlic powder, coriander and of course salt and pepper

4) mix it together and wrap it in silver foil. Bake for about 40 min. or till tender.

Roasted Red Beets and Goat Cheese

-Bake red beets in the oven, grate them and flavour with oil, garlic, honey and coriander

-Slice goat cheese and add a layer of the red beet mixture on top

-refridgerate and serve guests when chilled. Give them a glass of dry white wine as well!

WORLDCLOCK: WAKE UP AND CHOOSE

Awareness, sometimes I think everything is based on awareness. How much aware we are about the kind of world we are living in? Just human being can be aware of himself, that’s for sure. Today I would like to share with you the world’s clock, an interesting virtual gadget.
There are many scary things for me. It is unbelievable how society is living, growing, dying but also killing ourselves, nature, animals and so on. But this brings me back to the thought about limits. Everything has got its own limit even though most of the time we are just living our own life in a huge lack of awareness.
The world wide society we are living in cannot survive in the same way, that’s also for sure. But it is up to us start the change, in our own life, our family, community and beyond. We have the key, we can change, we can choose.
As the physics and Nobel price Denis Gabor (inventor of holography) once said: “Exponential curves grow to infinity only in mathematics. In the physical world they either turn around and saturate, or they break down catastrophically. It is our duty as thinking men do our best towards a gentle saturation instead of sustaining exponential growth, though this faces us with very unfamiliar and distasteful problems”.

Shoes

I am quite sure that most of us have ever seen any of these PETA advertisements featuring celebrities standing against fur:

I am not going to speak bad about PETA because I think it is a fantastic organization but have you noticed that none of these ads are against shoes made of animal skin?

I don't know about you but I would certainly like to see some of those...

If you have never seen any of the above mentioned ads, or just want to take a second look at them, check PETA's UK website here.

Toys of the ultrarich / Giving Pledge

Have you ever dreamed about having a yacht, a private yet or a helicopter?

Have you done the math? Not only about the price of any of these objects, but about how much it would cost to own it per year?

Anyway, everyday I get some newsletters about different topics and everyday I read them. In one of these newsletters I found a very interesting article at CNN Money.

I can just say that, as one of the comments say there, I hope some of these folks also allocate some of their money to help people (or animals in need). Not only they would be contributing to improve (or save) some lives, but they would also feel (and look) good... not to mention it would help their taxes :P

By the way, have you heard about the Giving Pledge initiative? Some of the big shots like Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, David Rockefeller, T. Bone Pickens, Barron Hilton, et al, are encouraging "the wealthiest individuals and families in America to commit to giving the majority of their wealth to philantrophy."

Sweet, huh? Seems that not only the regular folk is becoming more aware of his surroundings :))

Actually, some of the pledges are quite touching, don't you think?

Now, let me ask you, what would you do if you had so much money?

Temptations

On Sunday, Sergio organized a party to officially introduce his baby (Rafael) to the world. The occasion was even more special because Sergio's parents came from Mexico and guess what? They were going to cook! Uh oh, you probably know where I am going by now, right? :S

Anyway, as you can probably imagine I succumbed to temptation and ate some tacos of chilorio. Yeah, not only one but like three! I am telling you this because I do not want to feel like a hypocrite. Do you want to know my reasons?

First of all, I remembered what Marek told us once "if it was made with love by one of my loved ones I can make the exception". Second, despite I am Mexican, I never tried chilorio in my life so I thought "well, why not?"

I do not regret it, it was delicious! However, my body punished me later and my stomach felt the consequences... let's not get into details :P

I learned my lesson and even though I probably found the perfect excuse for breaking up my pescetarian way of life I am pretty sure I will not break it again, unless it is an extremely special occasion, just as it was last Sunday.

Recipe for today is very easy, and very typical in Mexico (the details were provided by Sergio's mom):

Frijoles de la olla (soupy beans)
Ingredients:
  • 3 cups of beans (any beans, but normally we use the black ones)
  • an onion
  • salt
  • oil (any cooking oil... I am using now olive oil)
  • a couple of small chiles (red or green, doesn't matter either).
Preparation:

Take the beans and put them in a bowl on water and leave them overnight (so they get soft and they get cooked easier).
Next day put the beans in a pot (or better a pressure cooker) with half an onion, the chiles (two or three if they are very spicy) and fill the pot with water (about 3/4 of the pot), add a bit of sea salt (watch it with the salt because if you put too much they get very salty) and some oil to the pot and that's it!

If you use a pot they will be ready in about two hours, if you use the pressure cooker it takes about half an hour.

You can add tomatoes, garlic (or bacon if you are omnivorous) and even beer (this version is called frijoles borrachos, or drunken beans)... but I just love them the way I explained. Nice and easy :)

Sun gazing

Have you ever heard about suntarians? Probably not because I think I just invented the term :D

Well, I am using it to refer to people whose only source of energy is the sun's and that's it. Yeah, there are individuals who not only do not eat meat but actually do not eat anything at all!

The most popular guy, and main promoter of this practice, is called Hira Ratan Manek. HRM states that he has been living only on sunlight and water since 1995 and he seems to be healthier than most people his age (he is almost 73 yo).

He says that for beginners the best, and lest harmful way of starting this practice is to watch the sun either one hour after the sunrise or one hour before the sunset. He also says that the periods for sun gazing should not be longer than 10 seconds at the beginning and advises to increase the amount of time you watch the sun periodically.

I am not recommending anyone to quit eating and live only from sun and water but I must say that since I started doing it I feel calmer and my awareness has increased. Well, lately there hasn't been much sun here in Prague but whenever I get the chance of looking at the sun I do it :)

If you want to take a look at HRM's detailed protocol take a look at this page.

Before I leave you for today allow me to share with you a breakfast recipe provided by my dear friend Katrine:

3 fruits and nuts

chop
  • a banana
  • peach
  • strawberries
  • some grapes
then chop some
  • almond
  • hazel
  • walnuts

Put chopped fruit in a bowl and sprinkle with nuts.

Meteors and UFO's

Yesterday I only managed to see one meteor :(
BUT, and some of you might not believe it, I saw an UFO!!
It was not only me, Petra and Lucie saw it too... actually they say they saw more than one! They were luckier than me and also saw more meteors :)
Anyway, for those of you who like conspiracy theories I will leave you with this webpage.
Would be nice to get some comments about it too so hope to hear from you!
Have a lovely Friday the 13th!!

Perseid Meteor Shower

I have seen a meteor only once in my life. It was during 2008's New Years party on Mazunte's beach with Petra, and two good friends of mine (Pookie and Elke). I remember like if it was yesterday because it was just amazing for me.
All of us had such a great time during that trip that this was like the cherry on the cake (at least for me).
Tonight, if the sky is clear, I will have the chance to experience again this beautiful show.
If you have the chance please go out and take a look at the sky. According to most sites, the best time for gazing up is from 10 pm onwards (GMT+1). For more info click here.
BTW, today for lunch I had a salad made of cucumber, red, yellow and green pepper and tomato.
For two persons you need:
  • a big cucumber (recommend you to peel part of it its skin as it is the hardest part to digest)
  • two tomatoes
  • one pepper of each color (if you want it can be only one color, it is up to you)
  • half of an onion (I like more the red one)
  • some salty cheese (balkanic for example)
  • a lemon or lime
  • some olive oil
  • you can add a can of tuna if you feel like it

Just chop the cucumber, tomatoes, peppers, onion and cheese if you went for the cheese version, mix them it all in a container and add the olive oil and lemon at the end. You can put some sea salt.

If you know of any other healthy recipes please feel free to share with us!

Happy meteor gazing!!

Oil pulling

Today I would like to tell you about something I started doing about a month ago. It is called oil pulling. Sergio recommended me this and I thought I would give it a try since it seemed so easy and the results so rewarding. I do not have any of the diseases it claims to heal but I started doing it for the sake of prevention. According to oil pulling practitioners it heals bronchitis, headaches, ulcers, encephalitis, et al, and prevents the growth of malignant tumors. Moreover, some people say, and I must confirm, it contributes to whiter teeth and shinier hair. Anyway, besides easy it is also very cheap! So, what is it you say? How to do it? When? What do you need?

It is very simple, just take a tablespoon of sunflower oil in your mouth, without swallowing it and start swishing it for about 10-20 min. I do it every morning as soon as I wake up and I do my other morning chores ;) just beware, it has to be before breakfast or water… you can take a shower and do it in the meantime or prepare yourself breakfast while you are swishing the oil.

For a more detailed info about this ayurverdic method take a look at this page or this other.

By the way, yes, this is my 4th day without beef, chicken, turkey, etc J

Day 3

Well, it has been easy and my body seems to appreciate it. Today I felt lighter and when I went to the gym I also felt ok.

By the way, during the night I had a crazy dream… I dreamt I was in a car with some other friends and there was a tornado but instead of driving away from it we were driving towards it. I don’t remember who the driver was but it was exciting and at the same time a bit scary… I mean, imagine passing a tornado!

Anyway, speaking about unusual stuff, today I read an article in the New York Times about some strange beauties, want to take a look? Click here. There is even a slideshow, so enjoy!

Day 2

Today is the second day of my new lifestyle. I feel great and have not had the meat craving. I have talked with some friends and most of them are excited! Today morning Petra (my girlfriend) and I had cereal with fruits (peaches, raisins, bananas, and mango) and a cup of tea. By the way, during the weekend we discovered a leak on the toilet’s ceiling and today we had it fixed. Well, there is still a big hole on it but at least the leak is gone!

Anyway, for lunch I had some gnocchi with spinach and later on I went for like a kind of pizza bread with grilled vegetables. When I arrived home we made 30 min of yoga and afterwards we had a salad (lollo rosso lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, apple vinegar, lemon, a bit of sea salt and oops… Balkan cheese and tuna)… I just love so much cheese and fish.

Actually I found out that more than vegetarian I am turning into a pescetarian… perhaps someday I will leave all kinds of meat and animal products but for now I am allowing myself to eat only fish and cheeses. I will definitely quit cow milk, as I have read it is definitely better to quit for good.

I don’t know about you but have you noticed that whenever you drink milk your body produces more phlegm? If you want to know more about the downsides of drinking regular milk take a look at this site. I am sure you will be as surprised as I was when I looked at all the cons.

Day 1 (New Life)

Today I decided to become vegetarian. There are many reasons for taking that decision but I will only name the ones I consider more important.

I always considered myself omnivorous and more than once I said I would never be able to stop eating meat; particularly beef. I just couldn’t imagine myself without eating a delicious steak, or some tacos al pastor (which were among my favorite Mexican delicacies). The idea of quitting meat was, at some point in my life, just unacceptable. When I found out about the unethical treatment of animals in slaughter houses, farms, etc, I tried to buy whenever possible (budget wise) bio products or made sure that there was a label stating that the animals were treated as best as possible. I just couldn’t think of my life without eating meat. I grew up eating meat and I thought I would die like that.

It is not that I didn’t care about their suffering while getting killed; I just thought that the impact of stop eating meat would be so minimal that it would not really make much of a difference. How completely wrong, or misinformed, I was!

So, what made me change my mind so drastically? Some time before Harmonic World was founded (around last year) I had my first serious approach to vegetarianism. I gave it a try for the sake of the health benefits that Sergio was always telling me it has. I must say that even though I liked, and my body felt lighter, I “felt” there was something missing. People say it takes 21 days to change a habit, I must say that these attempts didn’t last longer than 3 or 4 days.

What is different this time? Well, I can say my love for living beings has gone stronger as a consequence of my dog (his name is Kompa) and I now I am also completely convinced that even one person can make a huge difference. I do not want to keep supporting animal killing or suffering in anyway, therefore I invite you to follow up my transition.

On the other hand, I would like to make this blog as interactive as possible, a space for reflection and a tool for promoting awareness. The more we are, the merrier, the more ideas we bring the better. Only together we will create a truly Harmonic World.

Welcome to our blog, your blog!
